California Cowboy’s Western High Sierra Shirt Review

A couple weeks ago at Outdoor Retailer, I had the opportunity to chat with California Cowboy’s product designer, which cemented them (in my mind, at least) as one of the coolest new brands in the outdoor space.

Why?

Because they have infused a sense of fun into their product design. California Cowboy is all about products that help their customers embrace their inner cowboy. I grew up in rural Missouri, and a big part of my childhood experience was spent on my grandparent’s farm playing in the fields amongst their herd of cows.

This inner cowboy style was evident in our recently reviewed El Garibaldi Robe and all the more present in another product they sent us: their Western High Sierra Shirt.

It’s winter, so whether I am outdoors hiking or taking client calls in my chilly office, I do a lot of layering. And the Western High Sierra Shirt provides a comfortable and functional outer layer to any outfit.

This shirt was designed for Après Ski or “After Ski.” That time after you hit the slopes where you’re socializing in the lodge; sharing stories and beers as you warm up.

The Western High Sierra Shirt comes with California Cowboy’s signature beverage pocket. It’s perfect to stash your beer or a spare sandwich. It’s going to be my go-to for Super Bowl weekend, allowing me to stash an extra beer or free up my hands so I can fit as many wings as possible in my food hole.

But that is only one pocket of many. There’s a smaller side pocket that is perfect to stash a wallet or business cards in; a zippered dry pocket to keep your iPhone away from the snow or sloshing beers; and an inside pocket for a pen and notebook. Not to mention the two breast pockets to stash anything else.

The shirt also comes with a handy sunglass loop, so you don’t have to worry about losing your precious pair as you’re chilling or partying. I can’t tell you how many times I have lost my sunglasses that were perched on my head, so this is a lifesaver.

So, yes, I am a big fan of this shirt. Thanks to California Cowboy for sending me one to try out. From their booth at Outdoor Retailer, they are continue to innovate their product line and I am excited for what’s to come in 2022.

The shirt I tested was a Large. It fit great, even with layers. For reference, I am 5’11” and 185 lbs.

My new favorite hoodie: the Hydro Grid Fleece

It’s that time of year again in Colorado: the leaves have fallen, the days are shorter, and the temperature is dropping. Bundling up is key for outdoor activities. And there is nothing I like to wear more than a good hoodie.

Jack Wolfskin sent me their newest hooded sports jacket, the Hydro Grid Fleece, to try out and it quickly became my favorite hoodie.

It’s light, but warm due to the polyester material. The outer is smooth with a DWR finish to repel water. It has a soft interior for next-to-skin comfort.

The Hydro Grid Fleece is stretchy too. When I’ve taken it out on the trail for hikes and runs, I found that it moved easily with me. It wasn’t clingy and it also didn’t chafe.

While this hoodie performs great for outdoor activities, it has also become my go-to hoodie.

Just this morning, when it was 27ºF, I threw it on to walk the dog. Actually, I threw it on last night to walk the dog as well, and in the afternoon, and wore it for a handful of work Zoom calls.

It’s a really great jacket. No joke.

Product highlights:

  • It has a scuba-shaped hood, fitting comfortably over my head. It isn’t lose, which makes it a great hood for running. It doesn’t blow off and I can easily pull it over my head and ears without disrupting sunglasses or headphones. Or mess up my hair.
  • On the sides it has two deep, zippered pockets. When I am wearing the jacket to run errands, these pockets are great to hold a mask, keys, and wallet. For outdoor activities, because how deep the pockets are, I won’t put things that bounce. For running, I’ll leave them empty, but use them to stash a beanie or gloves for when I warm up.
  • On the left breast, it has another zippered pocket. This is wear I stash my iPhone. It’s large enough for an iPhone 12 Pro and while it does bounce, it isn’t bothersome.

Conclusion

Yes, I love the Hydro Grid Fleece. It’s a great hoodie and a great jacket overall. For the holidays, this is at the top of my recommended gift giving list!

I am 5’11” and just north of 190 lbs. I wear a large and it fits perfectly.

You can find the Hydro Grid Fleece at Jack Wolfskin’s website for $149.95.

Jack Wolfskin JWP Atmos Jacket Review

As the days are getting cooler, finding the right insulated jacket for your next outdoor adventure is key.

Jack Wolfskin sent us their new JWP Atmos Jacket to try out and we’ve had a blast on and off the trails with it.

The timing of getting the JWP Atmos Jacket couldn’t have been better. We recently added a puppy product tester to our crew, Parker, and I have found myself outside during the coolest parts of the day. The JWP Atmos Jacket is light-weight and easy-fitting for a quick throw-on for those walks.

But besides just walking Parker, I had the chance to get the jacket outside on a few hikes.

The jacket itself is lightweight; a men’s medium only weighing 410g.

It’s also incredibly stowable. Mid-way through my hike, I was feeling warm enough to slip it off. The jacket was able to be stuffed down into my backpack.

The JWP Atmos Jacket is made with Jack Wolfskin’s Flex Shield Exosphere material making it wind resistant and water repellent.

Inside, the jacket has lightweight insulation made of recycled synthetic fibers with stretch properties. I’m fairly certain that it’s the stretch properties that allows the jacket to pack so tightly into my backpack, but still retain it’s original shape without the insulation bulking up in one particular spot.

The jacket also has a hood, which is a great addition. It provided able protection when I was caught out in the rain, but also kept my ears nice and toasty on a cool morning walk with the puppy.

This jacket is also pretty stylish. It looks great on the trails, but is also a nice jacket to wear around town.

I am 5’11” and 195 lbs and I tested a men’s large.

If you’re on the hunt for a new Fall jacket, I highly recommend the JWP Atmos Jacket.

Showers Pass Elements Jacket Gear Review

Showers Pass Elements Jacket
Showers Pass Elements Jacket

A year ago I thought I had discovered the be-all end-all of cycling jackets: their Hi-Vis Torch Jacket. And until this moment, it had been my go-to commuter jacket. Showers Pass has exceeded my expectations with the release of the Elements Jacket.

What sets the Elements Jacket apart from the Hi-Vis Torch or other Showers Pass jackets is it’s design and functionality. Since receiving their product to test, I’ve had the opportunity to wear it on my bike commutes to work, but also on the trail rides. However, since temperatures have been gradually getting colder, I’ve found myself grabbing it even when I wasn’t cycling. It has become a go-to wardrobe element for walks in the cool mornings or playtime at the park at dusk.

The Elements Jacket is lightweight and extremely packable. There’s been many commutes where it has warmed up considerably by the time that I have to bike home and it easily stashes in my Backpack Pannier.

Like all Showers Pass products, the Elements Jacket was made for wet conditions with a fully seam-taped, waterproof-breathable performance fabric. The interior is made with a carbon-print lining that provides natural odor-resistance. With these fabrics the jacket is still flexible allowing for free movement. I never felt like the jacket was sticking or pulling on my skin, but I also never felt like I was constrained in my movements.

If you’ve followed our blogs, you know by now that I like to highlight products that have a sustainable or eco-friendly feature. The Elements Jacket does this by using eco-friendly dyes in it’s manufacturing process.

The jacket comes loaded with features: a removable hood, front pockets, reinforced shoulders, and ventilation around the midsection. While it doesn’t have all of the same reflectivity features as the Hi-Vis Torch Jacket, while the days are longer this hasn’t been an issue during my commutes.

The Elements Jacket comes in both Mens and Womens sizes. I’m 5’11” and 180 lbs and I wear a Medium.

United By Blue’s Men’s Bison Ultralight Review

United By Blue’s Men's Bison Ultralight
United By Blue’s Men’s Bison Ultralight

Last year we posted a review on the United By Blue Bison Snap Jacket. It’s still one of our favorites, so we were more than thrilled when they sent over their Bison Ultralight to test.

Very quickly, the Bison Ultralight became my go-to jacket in the winter. It was perfect for my commute to work in sub-freezing temperatures, hikes, or going sledding with the kiddos. Even though it’s touted as an ultralight jacket, as light as it is (only 15.8 oz.), it performed well in all temperature conditions.

The interior is 50% BisonShield and 50% wool insulation.

BisonShield is made from Bison down and recycled polyester. Bison down usually will end up in landfills as a bi-product of the ranching industry. United By Blue, true to their sustainability mission, acquires the material before it gets to the landfill, combs and cleans it before blending it.

The other cool thing about the Bison Ultralight is that it has a large interior pocket that you can use to pack the jacket into for easy travel. I took this jacket on a work trip and it was great. Because it was warmer in Denver than my destination I was able to compactly store it in my carry-on and easily pull it on when I arrived at my destination.

I am 5’11” and the jacket I am wearing is a Large. On their site, United By Blue notes that the jacket runs a half size small, so please consider sizing up for an optimal fit.

United by Blue’s Men’s Flannel-Lined Salvaged Hemp Shirt Jacket Review

United by Blue’s Men's Flannel-Lined Salvaged Hemp Shirt Jacket
United by Blue’s Men’s Flannel-Lined Salvaged Hemp Shirt Jacket

United by Blue is one of our favorite companies. Not only do they create amazing, durable clothing, but they also have an amazing mission: for every product sold, they remove one pound of trash from oceans and waterways.

But they also have an amazing collection of products that are made from sustainable material, like their Flannel-Lined Salvaged Hemp Shirt Jacket.

This jacket has become a favorite on cold days. It pairs well with other flannels, henleys or other long-sleeved shirts. It is perfect for working outside on the house, wearing on a hike, or layering in the office.

The Salvaged Hemp Shirt Jacket is made from—you guessed it—hemp. If you aren’t familiar with hemp, it’s a hardy crop that can grow almost anywhere and uses a fraction of the amount of water that cotton requires. It is a plant that also absorbs more carbon dioxide than trees and when harvested, nothing is wasted. Seeds are used to make oil while the stalks are transformed into fiber.

Also, the buttons on the jacket are nuts! Literally nuts. They use nuts from the Tagua Palm, which grows in Central America. They are hard, durable, and look pretty darn sweet.

I love how functional this jacket is. It doesn’t skimp on pockets, including an interior workwear pocket with an additional tool slot pocket; perfect for the pencil I’m always misplacing when doing woodwork or for the iPad stylus in the office.

If you’re looking for a great jacket this Fall, Winter, and Spring, take a look at the Flannel-Lined Salvaged Hemp Shirt Jacket or some of the other United By Blue jackets. You won’t be disappointed.

I am 5’11” and the jacket I am wearing is a Large.
